The sound of someone breathing woke me with a start. I laid completely still as I slowly opened my eyes. Something was off.

I waited for the sound to come again, but a different noise greeted me instead - the sound of wind rustling in the curtains of my room.

Phew. I must have been mistaken. It was just the wind. I had nothing to worry about. Not where I was. I was just jumping at shadows.

I didn’t know what time it was, but it was completely dark out. I could barely even see myself, let alone the rest of the room I was staying in.

All in all, it was a pretty nice room. It had a large four-poster bed that I was currently occupying, along with a small sitting area and its very own jacuzzi tub. The tub was filled at the moment. Not that I knew why. It had been like that when I’d come in so I’d just left it. Didn’t want to accidentally upset Mei’s dad by doing something I wasn’t supposed to.

My thoughts drifted to the events from earlier. The rest of the day had been a little hectic, but at least I didn’t have to sleep outdoors. A retainer of Lao’s had come by the council chamber shortly after everyone else had left, saying he had a room prepared for me back at Lao’s place. Of course I’d happily gone with him. Free room? Score.

Sadly, he’d also told me that with the change in situation, I’d be leaving early the next morning. There was no way I’d be able to stay for the dragon festival anymore. Which was a bummer, because I couldn’t save Mei if I couldn’t stick around. And I was determined to save Mei still.

Speaking of, I hadn’t had a chance to see Mei the whole rest of the day. I just hoped I’d see her before they took me away. Give me one last chance to plead our case and stick around. Then I’d just have to hope that the dragon god stuck around long enough to where the wedding wouldn’t happen right away.

I still didn’t like that Jian character. I knew everyone else was all gaga over him, but I wasn’t buying the innocent High Priest act. He was a shady guy for sure.

Now, how much of that was my gut telling me he was bad news and how much of it was the fact that he was the one responsible for taking Mei away from me was anyone’s guess. I supposed I’d have to temper my own feelings just a little bit. I needed to be objective if I was going to figure out how to save the day this time.

But seriously, though, the guy still gave me the creeps.

I pondered that very thought quite thoroughly while I laid there in my bed, letting my eyes adjust to the lighting in the room. Everything was still a shade of gray at the moment, but the corners of my bed were starting to become visible.
